Pros

Talented, motivated people will excel in the ad-hoc environment that exists in my command. While this is not necessarily suggestive of the Navy as a whole, my command places a lot of trust in its civilian engineers to manage their own projects and careers.

Cons

The command relies too heavily on contractors for entry-level development work and the contractor has very poor hiring standards. Project leads spend a lot of time fixing mistakes made by junior contractor engineers given too much too fast.

Pros

The paycheck comes every 1st and 15th. The travel is not what it used to be but I did get to see some cool places.

Cons

You will work with some real incompetent people, long hours, shown disrespect from higher authority, little control over your career.

Meet and work with great people. Excellent leadership and team building training. Hit or miss on senior leadership, and they determine a great of your overall quality of life.

Cons

On an operational boat, it is very difficult for your family to deal with not only the time away from home, but also the unceratinty of underway and deployment timeframes.
