Pros

Job Security is a great reason to join the Navy, as well as the training that one can receive. It makes for a good boosting point to start a real career, but don't recommend making a career out of it.

Cons

The general layout of the military doesn't encourage individual thought. It tends to be more about doing what you're told because you were told to do it. There's also a lot of rubbish that one has to go through, from writing up brag sheets about everything you do to clicking through computer based GMT's that teach you that it's a bad idea to drink and drive. They love to beat a dead horse.

Pros

The Navy provided many great benefits which are generally known. I was able to finance and finish my undergraduate degree while in the Navy without drawing on my GI Bill at all. Advancement is regular and the pay was fantastic for comparable jobs.

Cons

It is the military and as such the upper management is not always in tune with what is going on at the ground level. The abilities of the mid level managers varies greatly and, because you cannot quit or complain you may find yourself in the position of working for a miserable person.

Pros

Opportunity to travel all of the world. Responsibility given to junior engineers. Good starting salary and benefits along with help paying back student loans

Cons

Little incentive to work hard because promotions are based on time working there and not based on performance. large bureaucracy can make it difficult for the expression of new ideas.
