Pros

It's a great feeling to serve your country, and to be part of a team dedicated to a noble purpose.

Cons

Frequent time away from family, large percent of jobs require shift work, weekends, etc. There are still a lot of "dinosaurs" in senior leadership positions who are reluctant to accept new technologies, and/or think the way it was done when "they were Seamen" is the only way.

Pros

A proud and patriotic organization, generally takes care of its people and strives to reward performance. Surprising amount of autonomy if the job (and boss) requires; career is in your hands. Lots of good options (many not advertised...again its on you) outside of the typical career tracks. A close fraternity, work hard and play hard. Paid fairly well, won't get rich but comfortable.

Cons

Gone from home sometimes for long stretches (many months), often doing less-than-glamorous work. The navy accepts all types so you are often dealing with the personal and financial problems of folks who at other organizations you could easily fire. Can be frustratingly slow and lots of gov't inefficiency. Locations, spouses working, etc, the needs of the navy ultimately come first.

Pros

Excellent benefits package, and exciting career opportunities.

Cons

Rigid structure with very little lateral job opportunities. Long time away from Home & Family. The Navy rewards the job title instead of the performance achieved in that job. Senior job tours (i.e. Commanding Officer) are often too short in length to complete the feedback loop. Often times, the result of an organizational change is not observed by the CO who implemented it.
