Pros

The best reason to work for the Navy varies by what job you have and what rank you hold. There are some jobs that can be challenging and rewarding, but there are others that leave you over work and unappreciated. The Navy does ensure a stable pay check and health care can be a benefit if you are ill enough to receive proper attention and care.

Cons

Downsides to the Navy that I have experienced include: Poor management, hazardous working environments, poor living conditions, and extend periods of time at sea. The Navy has a tendency to operate on a policy of leadership by attrition. Meaning those that can lead, leave. The level of hazards that you encounter will vary depending by job, and it is important that you always are mindful of your own safety. The work living conditions are mostly found out to sea where food is questionable at best and personal space is a misnomer. But the Navy will provide for all your basic needs, as defined by the Navy.

Pros

Job security for the most part is out of this world. Benefits, both monetary and non, are abound. Opportunities for furthering your education after military are available for most. 20 years for retirement, and retirees get full medical for free.

Cons

Lack of respect from upper management, which seems to be partially due to the inconsistent promotion process. The evaluation process is flawed, and is one of the main factors used in advancement. Government contracts and politics can wreak havoc when trying to fulfill a mission.

Pros

Foriegn travel - there are many places that I have been too that I never would have imagined myself traveling to. A sense of belonging - the Navy really is like a big family (sometimes a big dysfunctional family). Wherever you go, there are people you know and people who will immediately accept you as part of their group. Medical and Retirement - In uncertain financial times, it is hard to beat the retirement package and medical benefits. Work experience and training - you can certainly get some good work experience and learn new skills.

Cons

Working hours at sea can be long and difficult. Normally, working hours while in port aren't too bad, but underway the job just doesn't seem to stop. It is also sad to see that the folks at the top don't know anything more than the folks down at the bottom of the org chart. Sailors don't always have the tools and material they need to do the job, so that is frustrating.
