Pros

Benefits are outstanding, including health insurance for self and family, ample opportunity for time off when not otherwise operationally engaged, access to tax-free Exchange shopping and low commissary (grocery) prices. Sense of satisfaction inherent to the job. Culture of fitness and adventure, including access to gyms around the world, as well as races and adventure trips coordinated by Morale, Wellness, and Recreation (MWR), a component that exists specifically to promote fitness and activities.

Cons

Sometimes you have to go to war.

Pros

Advancement can be very fast if in a field that has a shortage of people. The ability to travel the world is always a plus. Building friendships that can last a lifetime. Being part of a team that always gets the job done no matter what is in the way.

Cons

Long hours and away from family often during holidays and special occassions. Pay is often lower in the military then in the civilian world but benefits such as medical and vacation are usually better. Sometimes your opinion is not valued just becuase you are a junior member of the team.

Pros

Training. Acquisition of a government security clearance. College. Early-career opportunity to lead and develop others. Seeing new places. Travel. Meeting new people. Testing your own capabilities and determining your own limits. Training, training, training. Firm rules and regulations. Benefits package: medical, dental, visual, vacation, etc. Montgomery GI Bill (MGIB). Tuition assistance. Non-taxed allowances, such as housing, food, etc. For people seeking a change in life, the Navy represents an outstanding opportunity to redefine their career trajectory.

Cons

Contracted employment. Low pay. Risk. Family separation. Low pay. Forced relocation. Inconsistent schooling for children. Low pay. Firm rules and regulations. While benefits package is robust, the only option is military medical, which has a less-than-ideal reputation.
