Pros

The best reasons to serve in the Navy are pride and patriotism. Additionally, as a junior naval officer (as well as any branch of service I assume) you will have access to a lot of training in different fields, which overall will make you a more well-rounded leader. Additionally, the teamwork you encounter is unparalleled in the civilian world. You will learn from great mentors, and also, discover character traits that are not effective and unfortunately even repulsive.

Cons

Long deployments can be difficult to manage, especially if you are married with children. In addition, there are obviously career ceilings. Downtime too can be difficult to handle when you are used to operating at a fast pace and motivated to provide quality work.

Pros

Training, health care, education benefits. VA loans.

Cons

The senior personnel in charge are all idiots. 80% of the people in the Navy are low class and poorly educated individuals. It does not matter what you do or where you work, there is an unbelievable amount of BS that you must deal with on a day to day basis. Yes the education is nice....but getting an education while in the Navy is next to impossible...yes free health care sounds like a wonderful idea, except its free, which means its horrible. The training is decades behind the technology you are expected to use. Overall, the Navy is not a place to work if you are used to a high class, professional workplace and co-workers. If you plan on joining the Navy, make sure you are prepared to have no family life, and to have most of your possessions stolen by the people you work with. My advice to anyone who is considering joining the Navy is....don't. Go to college, get a degree and if you still really want to join, become an officer. Going enlisted is the biggest mistake you will ever make. I consider myself to be very smart and capable, and therefore I will get out of the Navy and get my degree and never look back!!

Pros

When I went to work for the Navy, my main reasoning other than the educational opportunities, the training, hands on experience, and pride, was the opportunity to travel and see the world. Since becoming a Sailor I've been to Australia six times. Hawaii 12 times, Japan, China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Guam, Bali, Thailand, Dubai, Oman, Mexico, the Bahamas, and 40 states. The financial opportunities have been outstanding. I'm making more money than I ever expected, and have the job security that very few of my peers can match.

Cons

Obvious downside is being away from home for extended periods of time. I don't want to make it sound like you're out all the time, you could always count on traveling around the globe for six months, once every three years. Other times you may go out to sea for three-four weeks and still visit different cities along the various coasts. All in all, I'm proud to serve and the sacrifice is paid back by being able to see and travel numerous countries.
