Pros

Good health and retirement benefits Located by the beach

Cons

The Naval Satellite Operations Ctr. or NAVSOC's Network Division, Software Department is by far the worst place I have ever worked at. The "Computer Engineer" job advertised on USAJobs is an absolute joke and life destroyer. The first few weeks on the job you may not notice any big problems, but after a few weeks the problems will become very apparent. You will notice that there is all most no one in the department, and everyone in the department is planning on leaving or retiring. Everyone who has filled the GS-7 and GS-9 positions the past EIGHT YEARs, have either left, transferred, been FIRED or DID NOT MAKE their promotions. In fact on the job posting it says "Promotions are NOT Guaranteed" . Upper management is so obsessed with penny pinching that YOU will most likely not be promoted or receive adequate training for your position . There are almost NO OPPORTUNITIES for Training or necessary operations. On top of that management had unrealistic expectations for GS-7 and GS-9 employees despite paying them only half of what industry does. In addition they use outdated equipment and you will be working with computers from the 90s and 2004. This Place is VERY Different from other government jobs. There are no projects for you to work on, you will only maintaining outdated equipment while same senior engineers work on the same project they have somehow not managed to finish in a decade . I witnessed someone getting fired right after giving HR notice they were leaving. Management is so sick of seeing so many people quit, that they will hurt you on your way out. My advice for anyone unfortunate enough to come here is to QUIT WITHOUT NOTICE and to NOT ATTEMPT TO TRANSFER to another government agency IF ON PROBATION. What ever you do DO NOT WORK here. If you are looking for a place to start your career or a good government job, please look elsewhere. This review may seem like an exaggeration, but it is not. NAVSOC destroys lives and careers. Please heed my warning and save your career.

Pros

Great Chance to serve your country. Interesting job path, plenty of opportunities to see the world. The mission is great, and you help your fellow Americans. Solid pay as compared to peers if you graduated from a middle-tier university. Excellent health plan.

Cons

Unfortunately, the worst sort of people tend to stay in the military till retirement. The intelligence community is to full of folks who want to prove that they are "real" soldiers/sailors, and thus focus way to much time on appearances at the expense of getting the job done. No retirement benefits for anyone who stays in less than 20 years.
