Pros

Excellent benefits, job security, (mostly) playing music for a living, the amazing chance to live overseas. I would have stayed in if I could have worked the rest of my time in Italy. I played with some amazing musicians and made lifelong friends.

Cons

You are in the Navy, which is not a bad thing. If you can embrace the military life, you will be very happy. If you expect it to be a professional orchestra, you will be frustrated and disappointed. The natural selection that occurs for professional civilian musicians does not happen in the military, so if someone starts to play their instrument poorly for whatever reason, you could be stuck sitting next to them for years or decades.

Pride of service to your country. Pension at retirement. 50% of base pay at 20 Years, 2.5% more for each year after 20.

Cons

Being away from your family on long deployments. Stress coupled with the long deployments. Hours can be long at times, but that comes with any job.
