Pros

Remote work, interesting challenges, important mission, stable product, easy to get away without doing much work, good analytics

Cons

Whimsical CEO who cries at company all hands, says there are no layoffs/strong business, then announces restructuring that pushes many people out of roles. Same CEO pushes on a strategy for 1.5 years that cannibalizes core business, doesn’t recognize it till much later, then pulls back strategy when damage is done. Stock prices plummeted, weak PM and engineering teams

Pros

I've learned a lot during my time here, the roles are highly structured and they do a great job building a true sales and account management foundation. My coworkers are all very bright, team players who support each other throughout the challenges and growing pains that occur.

Cons

They are still trying to figure out their place in the market which causes a lot of reorgs and shifts. Unfortunately, a large number of people were laid off at the end of 2020 and this really hurt morale, while I understood needing to shift the focus of the company to focus on the Enterprise business, to lay off 60 people in the middle of a global crisis felt a bit heartless especially given the financial performance the company had just obtained.

Pros

The benefits were extremely helpful and were a reason why I (and others) stayed for so long. Work from home Wednesdays and free food were a plus.

Cons

If you were on the sales side, then you most likely did not have a life. A typical day at Upwork was working 45-50 hours a week, eating lunch at your desk, dealing with multiple "cliques" at work, unprofessional management and not being able to take PTO because of unrealistic expectations from higher-ups. A lot of external hiring led to hardly any career opportunities for the sales teams. The management lacked the tools needed to support their teams. Favoritism was big at Upwork. If you didn't go to the happy hours or interacted with the team, you were seen as "not part of the culture". Within Large Accounts, Mid Market and BDRs, hardly anyone has hit their quota within the last 6 months (or even throughout 2019). Don't just take my word for it, do your research on Linkedin and see how high the turnover has been within their sales department this year.
