Pros

Very smart and capable people (who are still sticking around) Great products that deliver significant value to customers Nice campus

Cons

Paul Maritz is a visionary and very decent guy, but he installed cronies who installed other cronies who echoed each other and insulated themselves from the reality on the ground. The disconnect is incredible! The new breed of executives brought into the company during the past two years are seriously wrecking the place. They strutted into the place with the attitude that they are the ones with the experience to take the company to the next level, and completely trampled on all the engineers and managers who actually built the business in the first place. The environment is so political now that meritocracy is out the windows, and if you say something they don't like or agree with, you're ignored, or side-lined. Did I say meritocracy is dead? At the upper management level, it's all about who likes who, who aligns with who, and who licks boots the best. Execs are hiring their buddies into the company as other execs, but define the promotion bar so high that internal people can't possibly qualify any more. Company seems to treat people like commodity now. Stock price is currently the only thing still holding the place together, attrition is picking up, but no one who can do something about this seems to know or care.

Pros

Good compensation. Nice place in the current cloud service movement. You will gain good knowledge and make many good connections.

Cons

If you are product manager, you will feel great to work for any team inside VMware except desktop BU. The desktop BU pm team used to be a great team. However since late 2009, all of original founders who built this team decided to leave. The team was then taken over by an engineering director, who unfortunately lacks both product management experience and leadership quality. As part of the change, the BU also moved several engineering managers to this team to replace several experienced product managers. As a result, the team has been run by an arrogant yet highly inexperienced person. He basically can not and are afraid of making any strategic and operational decisions. He trusted people who shared the same qualities and can only follow his order. The morale in this team is extremely low. The team has a very bad reputation within the organization. If you are looking for a job here, my advice is to run as a crazy from this team.

Pros

Relaxed work environment, good compensation. Good coworkers, if you find the right team. Exposure to motley crue of technologies.

Cons

Mediocre middle management. Lack of focus. The top management has good vision, but it does not reach the bottom layer. The main reason for this is that product management is practically non-existent. There's very little understanding of the importance of true product ownership. Design by committee is everywhere. And politics - no, POLITICS, with all caps - is everywhere.
