Pros

VMware has provided for a stable job so far and the compensation seems to be at least on par with other companies. For the most part, the employees are friendly and pleasant to work with. Overall the company seems to be holding a reasonable course and should continue to be successful for some time to come. For the most part, you are given some flexibility in finding work that interests you.

Cons

The company has grown way too fast. The fast growth has allowed mediocre employees to excel in all the confusion. Sometimes there is a lot of chaos. Often there is a disconnect between management and engineers. The headquarters is located in a boring office park.

Pros

- Brilliant software engineers. Really some of the best I've worked with anywhere. - Cool product. - Good work environment. - Laid back, bay area culture. - Successful business. - Hours can be very flexible. - Can work remotely.

Cons

- Difficult to move into new areas of work. - Difficult to move from engineering to research. - Deadlines are not expected to be met. - Non-engineering groups seems somewhat dysfunctional. - Rapid scaling seems to have led to scaling problems.

Pros

VMware is the market leader in the emerging space of x86 virtualization. We're a growing, Engineering focused company with products lines that run from the Enterprise to the Desktop to Consumer markets. If you're interested in having a big impact at a company working on truly disruptive technology, VMware's one of the few companies out there for you.

Cons

Our support for remote workers could be better. If you're not working out of the Palo Alto or San Francisco offices, you may experience some random pain from time to time (for example, the link to the primary RCS servers running in Palo Alto might randomly not be as speedy as you'd like all the time).
