Pros

Long track history of not having to lay off or fire people. They pride themselves on being a place you can grow. And the ability to relocate is nice.

Cons

Very old boy network style. String people along with promotions. Yet someone that comes in from say the pharmacy to take on a management position will be fast tracked through the system even though the supporting cast may be holding there hand through the whole process.

Pros

profit sharing plan is still about 3 to one for every dollar that is put in.

Cons

Loss of work hours. 40 hour work week is now just above part time for many long term employees while new hire employees can work almost 40 hours.

Pros

I really liked my pharmacy manager because he was very supportive of his staff and most of the technicians and other pharmacists I worked with were great as well - willing to cover shifts and help out on the job. There seem to be good opportunities if you are looking to have a career as a pharmacist (ie scholarships and internships) or if your goal is to eventually become a store manager or higher. If you stay long enough to become vested, the profit sharing program is nice as well. Senior pharmacy technicians receive a Christmas bonus as do the pharmacists.

Cons

Working for a 24 hour store was very stressful. Turnover is very high because when customers are rude management is not supportive of its staff. When you hear the motto: "The customer is always first" it is particularly true for Walgreen. They seem more interested in making a buck than in having their staff respected by selfish customers. You have to wait a year for profit sharing and then when you finally become eligible it seems you are hounded by store management to join because there is some benefit to having high employee enrollment. You have to work 2 holidays a year and it's a first come, first serve basis. If you can get in good with the other senior pharmacy technicians then you will be promoted faster, even if you don't have the time you should or know everything you're supposed to know to be promoted. This goes for scheduling as well. Friends get priority on having weekends off and the good shifts.
