Pros

Once you are at the Bank expect to have the experience of a lifetime. Due to the highly collaborative nature expect to work across teams, departments, units, and hop around building rooftops in downtown Washington. You will meet the highly esteemed people in the field of international development from all over the world since the Bank has played a special role in the field since its inception in 1946. Working at the Bank is a dream come true for many development practitioners and positions are highly coveted. Bank offers full benefits, such as gym, health, pension etc. Highly tactful and respectful multicultural environment where each employee is truly valued and appreciated. Because of this respectful environment, each individuals is allowed to manage one's schedule with leniency and flexibility. The cafeteria has excellent food featuring cuisines from around the world at reasonable prices.

Cons

In more recent years many individuals get hired as STT, STC, ETT or ETCs (short and extended-term temporaries or consultants). These hires cannot work more than 180 days per year and have very few benefits but full access to Bank facilities and its people. Politics and internal competition to take on responsibilities among junior and mid level managers can get hairy. Temporaries and consultants must worry about contract renewal every 3 to 6 months until they consistently perform and earn an assignment on the grade scale.

Pros

On the operations side, great opportunity to make an impact on development and unique brand for dialogue with countries. Very challenging and intellectually stimulating environment for people working in the countries and extremely rewarding for country managers. But you must be willing and able to navigate the maze of the world bank group knowledge.

Cons

Risk adverse environment with too many layers for decision making. Upward mobility, and benefit package.
