Igniting Change - How an event turned into a movement ๐ฅ Reflecting on the success of our last year's Women@Refractories event held during #UNITECR2023 in Frankfurt, we are thrilled to see our vision come to fruition - a dedicated platform for women in the #refractory industry, along with our valued suppliers and customers. It's important to note that this initiative isn't just about women; we were delighted to welcome a diverse range of participants at the event last autumn. If you couldn't attend, don't worry. Today, at The Myrtle Foundation Ceremony, we celebrate a pivotal moment in #RHIMagnesita's quest for Net Zero emissions. ๐ฑ Myrtle is MCi's newest Carbon plant that will capture up to 1,000 tons of CO2 and is called after an evergreen shrub. Our alliance with MCi Carbon signifies a leap forward, set to save 50,000 tons of CO2 through their CCU-Technology in Austria. As pioneers, we're honored to be the first commercial-scale customer and investor, propelling sustainability. Thanks to MCi Carbon for their outstanding dedication. The entire RHI Magnesita family is committed to this transformative project, eagerly anticipating the birth of Austria's inaugural industrial-scale CCU plant in 2028. EU Commissioner for Energy, Kadri Simson, accepted RHI Magnesitaโs invitation and visited the MCi Carbon plant in Newcastle! ๐ฑ The visit highlights the pivotal role of CCU technology for the decarbonization of the European and global industry. "In the pursuit of our climate goals, embracing diverse technologies is paramount,โ EU-Commissioner Kadri Simson emphasizes. โItโs imperative to establish a robust legal framework within the EU that not only enables but also endorses innovative solutions crucial for attaining our net zero objectives." #RHIMagnesita, as MCi Carbon's first global commercial customer, plans to deploy MCi's decarbonization solution to drastically reduce our Scope 1 emissions. "The partnership with the Australian startup MCi Carbon is forward-looking, combining carbon capture storage and carbon utilization, which is currently the most promising way for the refractory industry to reduce process emissions and thus achieve our Net Zero goal," said Constantin Beelitz, Regional President Europe, CIS & Tรผrkiye at RHI Magnesita. We will need every technology that brings us closer to climate neutrality! ๐ฑ Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU) is the most promising solution for us as a hard to abate industry. The cleantech start-up MCi Carbon shows that it can work! Our sincere thanks go to Kadri Simson, who came to see this groundbreaking technology for herself in Australia yesterday. In order for us to be able to apply this solution in Europe (and then globally), we need a comprehensive view of CCU under the EU-ETS directive. Letโs avoid limiting the scope of its applications for CCU products to construction applications (cement & concrete) only. Let's clear the way for CCU on a grand scale. ๐ Our CCU journey will go on - next stop: Europe! We want to bring CCU to Austria/Hochfilzen on a large scale in 2028. Stay tuned!
RHI Magnesita announces its intention to acquire Resco Group, a US based producer of alumina monolithics and wide range of basic and non-basic refractories. This #acquisition continues the Groupโs strategic growth trajectory in alumina-based refractories by providing US customers with an improved product offering. Commenting on the acquisition, CEO Stefan Borgas said: โI am pleased to report that the acquisition of Resco represents a step-change for our US business and our North American production footprint. The acquisition advances our โlocal for localโ production strategy and will shorten supply chains, improve our speed of reaction, and increase the security of supply of refractories for our customers.โ Resco operates seven plants and two raw material sites in the US and two plants in the UK and Canada. Rescoโs Rescobond and Rescocast brands are widely used in refining and petrochemical applications by global customers. The acquisition is subject to customary closing conditions including merger control authority approval and is expected to be completed in H2 2024. https://lnkd.in/dSw7EDDu
