The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Barclays in Jul 2009
Interview
Upon completing the online application I was invited to take online tests. Numerical and verbal.
Then I was invited for a two interviews with senior associated, held one after the other. Questions were about myself, about the company, basic financial questions (i.e. what are the important financial documents companies post and what do these help us asses. Answer is Income statement, Balance sheet and Statement of CF with short explanation on each). I also had a more "thinking" questions like what is the angle between the hand's in a watch if time is 03:20. Answer is 20 degrees.
After a week I got a call and invited to another interview, done with a senior associate in NY via video conference. Asked to tell about me, then asked how would I evaluate if buying a building is good/bad investment. Answer is that you should consider cost of capital, alternatives in market, potential gain when selling and renting.
A few days later invited for the final stage which was an assessment centre of 2 days. First day started afternoon, with 3 more people (total 4). We got a case study on a mining company looking to acquire another company. We had 60 minutes to prepare individually a presentation on the case to be presented on the next day. We got papers to take notes but were not allowed to take them with us outside that room. We were also told that we will have 30 minutes on the next day before we present to go over our notes again and to use them when presenting. Then we were taken for dinner with 10 of the team (Director, senior associates, senior analysts and HR staff) and got to ask questions.
On the next day the four of us got there in the morning and had a joint task: to go over a list of tasks as if it is the first day of the week and to prioritize them individually. Then to reach a decision as a group and present the others with our decision. This all was done when in the room with us were 2 HR people, 2 senior analysts, 2 senior associates.
Then we were questioned on our discussion and decisions.
After that we got the 30 minutes to go over our notes from yesterday and finalize the presentation. We had 10 minutes for presenting followed by 10 min of Q&A. We each presented individually to a senior analyst and 3 senior associated.
3 days later I received a friendly call from the senior associate who explained I was not selected and provided feedback for my performance.
