I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Booking.com (Amsterdam) in Jan 2018
Interview
Completed the online tests and immediately received an email from a recruiter apologising because he had to hand me over to another recruiter and that it had been a pleasure working with me (never spoken to/emailed the guy in my life). Nevertheless I receive a call from the other recruiter which went great. We even booked an interview with 2 senior data scientists right there and then for which I received a confirmation by email. The evening before the interview was supposed to happen I received an email notifying me that the position had been filled.
I understand that it was just an interview and not an offer and the company has no obligations but its not a good look. I used to think of booking.com as a young company with a great culture but now I wouldn't consider working with them after this.
I applied online. The process took 3 months. I interviewed at Booking.com (Amsterdam) in Apr 2018
Interview
I applied via the "Jobs" section in Hackerrank, where I had to answer a simple statistics exam. I can't remember all the questions but they were related to regularization and p-values. Then I had a brief phone interview with HR so they could tell me more about the position. Then I had a technical phone interview with two scientists, where I talked about a project I had previously worked on, they asked a lot of technical questions. Then they asked how I would implement a "best value for money" offer on their website and afterwards how I would test it.
Then I flew to Amsterdam (they paid for everything) to have an on-site interview. I had three interviews: in the first one I had to give a presentation that they had asked me to prepare about a destination recommender; in the second one (with different people) they asked me how I would implement a recommender system in their website; and in the third one I talked with a manager about myself and past projects, this last one wasn't technical.
In the end they told me that they were looking for someone with more experience and that I was more suitable for a junior position, which they didn't have at the time so they didn't give me an offer.
I applied through an employee referral. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Booking.com
Interview
The process started by a test on HackerRank. It was a multiple choice test, and fairly a hard one.
After that, it took them about 5 days to respond and schedule a phone interview with a recruiter. The recruiter was very nice and informative, and you basically can never fail in this one.
After that there is 2 rounds, the first is also a phone call but with 2 employees from the tech department, they ask more technical questions.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
Multiple choice test on HackerRank. Focused a lot on model complexity, decision boundaries, validation of results.
