I applied through an employee referral. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Deloitte (Toronto, ON) in Jan 2021
Interview
Interview process was fair and everything was great until it came down to negotiating a compensation; that's when typical Deloitte true colors came out. Deloitte is notorious for highly overworking their employees (average 60-80 hour weeks) and not paying industry standard wages. I knew the hours would be longer joining Deloitte so I had an expected salary range that I would be comfortable accepting.
Typical Deloitte, they tried low balling me with an offer; I asked for an additional 10k on their offer which they then immediately snubbed me for simply asking. They could have simply came back and said we can't meet that and this is the highest we can go but without giving me any reason or explanation, I got an email from the recruiter saying they've decided to go a different way. I was extremely surprised to be passed on especially because I had a great interview process and the partners were super interested. Salary negotiation is part of any hiring process but clearly not at Deloitte, so be careful if you end up in my shoes.
Deloitte is known for terrible work-life balance so make sure you do the math before accepting their offer. Business Insider recently interviewed multiple Deloitte employees and wrote an article on the high turn-over rate and burnouts experienced at Deloitte due to the expectation to work 80 hour weeks on a regular basis. If you're not ready to put in the hours with a below average salary, then I recommend you look elsewhere.
