I applied online. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Macy's (Honolulu, HI) in Jul 2011
Interview
I applied online and got an e-mail the next day asking to schedule an appointment. I showed up early and was surprised that I only waited less than 10 minutes. The lady was nice, brought me up to the next floor to talk but the room was taken so we talked in the training room. The interview lasted for an hour and I seemed to answer all of her questions pretty well seeing how I had previous customer service and sales floor training.
After the interview she excused herself to get a piece of paper and then came back to tell me she had bad news. Apparently the only position available was just taken and there was no other so she will 'call me' if anything comes up. If there was no positions available she should have said so in the beginning and not wasted an hour, I think that was just business talk for 'you don't fit our description'.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
-Why Macys
-Why not other department stores
- How would you help the customer celebrate their purchase
- How would you sell our card
-Name a time when you worked for a team, what was your role, what was the outcome, what did you do if someone was slacking (ect lots of 'team' questions)
-How would you initiate talking to the customer
-What would you do if you saw a coworker doing something wrong (like gray area things i.e. abusing employee discount)
-If a customer was buying pants, how would you try to encourage them to buy another pair or a complimentary item
-how would you drive sales
-Time you played a role of a leader
-How would you get them to make a purchase
That was very bad, I arrived 5 minutes earlier and they told me someone will be there with me in a moment but that moment took 45 minutes later. They did not that I had an appointment for an interview!!! The interview was very very informal in a room that looks very bad.... Bad experience!!
I applied online. The process took 4 days. I interviewed at Macy's (Jersey City, NJ) in Dec 2011
Interview
This was around the time during Christmas in December of 2011 or should I say when they were "really" hiring. So I applied online, and there was no assessment test and I was asked to schedule an interview right on the spot right after I completed the application. Then once I scheduled my interview, and I went to human resources on the 2nd floor by the women section and told the people at the desk that I am here for an interview. The ladies seemed a little disorganized and my first impression was, this might not be the place to work for, but anyways lets see. So I waited for about an hour to an hour an half and there was only two recruiters available and the first recruiter was loud and taking his sweet time interviewing the candidate for the "Sales Associate" position. He was loud and I thought I was going to be next to be yelled at. Moments later, the girls upfront realized that the first recruiter was taking so long to finish up with his candidate, so they called one of the second managers who was on duty to interview me and the rest of the candidates. So I pulled into his office, and it really did not seem like an office, it was more like a closet with a computer just sitting right in front of him. He looked at my application and asked me series of questions and then at the end he told me, "I am sorry, I do not have ANYTHING for you at this time. However, I am going to store your application so that in case we are interested in you, we will contact you. " What came to my mind was,"Oh really? So, I basically wasted my time for nothing and you are sitting there lying to me that you are going to 'save' when you guys are interested in me again." After all, after I exited the room, and from the corner of my eye, I witness the interviewer ripping up my application and throwing it away. Thank god, I do not work here, even if I did, I would not be happy.
