I applied online. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at Macy's (Pittsburgh, PA) in Nov 2010
Interview
Initially I applied online for the Visual Merchandiser position. Within a few hours I received an email inviting me to schedule an interview so I did. I was excited that they emailed so quickly, that maybe I was a good fit. When I got there for my interview, they were pretty busy. She asked me a few basic questions and said she only had a few seconds to look over my info. She then went on to describe the position, and how large the store was, how many long hours she spends there, and how she got started in the field. Basically telling me I didn't have enough experience. It was pretty frustrating to be almost immediately shot down for it, considering how quick I got an email.
She then offered to talk to another manager for a open sales position. I said ok and was returned to the waiting area. When the other manager came up, he didn't really introduce himself, just starting looking at a chart and after a few minutes said.. "How do you feel about Housewares?". I again said ok, he told me to return the next day with my social security card and they'd officially hire me. And I'd get paid for it.
The next day when I came in, he was no where in sight, and there was no record that he wrote down of me coming in. Another manager offered to talked to me. Which turned into another interview and she suggested a different department. The manager of that department came up to talk to me, and decided I didn't have enough experience for the full time position, but they decided to offer me the part time one in sales.

The process took 1 day. I interviewed at Macy's (San Diego, CA) in Jul 2010
Interview
Group interview with few other people wanting different positions. At the end they take visual merchandising candidates into another room. They explain what the job consist of and then they ask you if you are able to complete tasks needed to get the job. In my case the ended up saying that the position was on-call and you would end up working like once every 2 months. I though it was a waste if my time.
I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Macy's (Columbus, OH) in Jul 2009
Interview
I got a call from the visual manager to set up a first interview. I was one of several highly qualified prospects for the position. They were looking for more than a design background, they wanted spirit, energy, and potential, the whole package. Then I was one of 8 that made it to the 2nd round of interviews with the DVM and VM. That went very well. I had very high energy and they were inpressed with my portfolio. They more or less wanted to see how I reacted with them, not so much what I had to offer. Visual works as a team, and they want to hire people who will mesh well with there team.
