I applied through a recruiter. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at US Air Force (Fort Gillem, GA) in Dec 2011
Interview
You first contact a recruiter, schedule a date to take your physical and ASVAB. The ASVAB is pretty simple if you have common sense and can graduate high school. You receive your scores the same day. Once you have completed your physical, you're free to go home. Your recruiter will contact you with jobs matching your geographic preference that you're qualified for. Once you select a position, you're sworn in to the military and told dates that you will attend training.

I applied in-person. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at US Air Force (Saint Louis, MO) in Mar 2010
Interview
The hiring interview process begins with talking to an Air Force recruiter at your local recruiting office or school. The recruiter will be interested in your ASVAB and SAT scores, the better the test scores the more job opportunities. If you have a desired job or career field then you may have to wait for an opening, plan for this and do not go in open general.
