I recently attended an interview with Lightyear for a compliance related role, and I must say the experience was both disappointing and concerning. The interview was conducted by someone with no relevant compliance or regulatory background, specifically a customer support professional who appeared unqualified to assess the technical expertise required for such a critical role. The interviewer posed questions about identifying UBO which is like very basic level and areas like integrating Hungarian registered businesses, yet his lack of understanding of compliance frameworks, strategic risk management, and regulatory processes was evident. It quickly became clear that the interviewer was gathering ideas rather than genuinely assessing my qualifications or expertise. This raised serious ethical concerns, as it felt like the purpose of the interview might have been more about extracting insights or collecting information for an internal project rather than evaluating a candidate for the role. Compliance is a highly specialized field and ensuring that controls are designed, implemented, and monitored effectively requires a deep understanding of regulatory frameworks. Having someone with no expertise in this area conduct the interview was not only unprofessional but also feels disrespectful to the process and to candidates time. Upon reviewing the interviewers background, I discovered he had previously worked at Wise, a company where governance is a joke, one person keeps jumping from one department to other departments due to lack of expertise or improving the quality of product or services. This strengthened my impression that Lightyear is not taking its compliance hiring seriously. Furthermore, the process seemed overly focused on “culture fit” rather than the technical qualifications required for the role. Having great cultural alignment was one of the important reason for applying, however it should not come at the expense of evaluating the candidate’s ability to meet the technical and strategic demands of a compliance role.
