Pros

Flexible work life balance. Great electrical hardware systems and innovative power grid solutions.

Cons

Software is not ABBs core business. They bought Ventyx to fill a portfolio hole and have tried to cobble together some disparate systems to provide customers with a ‘smoke and mirrors’ whole of enterprise software solution. Brisbane office will probably disappear soon as a result of increased outsourcing to Malaysia and Indonesia with a corresponding decrease in software quality. Not making any new sales and relying heavily on existing licenses. Many senior ‘Ventyx’ executives and tech people have already seen the writing on the wall and left. Mostly to G.E. or other more software savvy companies. Not much left in the way of tech talent in the Brisbane office. ABB Ellipse customers are seriously unhappy particularly with the MS Azure solution which has everyone constantly fighting support fires instead of innovating. Even Australian Defence wants to get rid of ABB Ellipse in favor of SAP so they won’t be able to rely on that backup for much longer which is sad because ABB Ellipse is still a technically superior product to SAP.

Pros

I find that there are many opportunities within ABB. Working in a corporate location (i.e. not a plant), there are many opportunities to move laterally and upwards across multiple functions. It is not uncommon for people to work in Finance, but then move into HR or SCM or other function. Within Finance there are opportunities within AP, AR, GA, Treasury, Real Estate, Corporate Accounting, etc. The people are friendly and the work hours are reasonable (I wouldn't have said this 7-10 years ago).

Cons

Bullies are often promoted (especially women) and low performers have the most job security. 2% per year in US - barely covers inflation. Company loyalty is strong as many people have been with the company for 15+ years. While this could be a pro, it seems more of a con as these people do not see the benefit of change which is needed.

Pros

Large, stable company, middle of the road salary and benefits, good place to work if you are looking for an international adventure, mix of low and high tech, so might be a way for someone to get into high tech

Cons

Very slow moving, hierarchical European management style, people run around scared to stick their neck out. A conglomeration of low tech and high tech products and they struggle mightily trying to do the higher tech stuff.
