Pros

Relaxed atmosphere, great people to work with, good work/life balance. The people here are great and do not berate you. Vacation time is ample and plus you can always work from home, which is a great way to get work done without being bothered.

Cons

No bonuses or raises since 2006! Senior executives need figure a good business plan so AMD can make some money. AMD's primary competitor is Intel and from I can see so far from the salary ratings, I am being underpaid as a senior design engineer. The main reason for this is probably that AMD is lost billions last year (2007) and so probably did not have any money for raises.

Pros

While not perfect, AMD - for the most part - respects its employees and has a positive corporate culture. It's the anti-Dell. At almost nine years there, I feel that good work gets rewarded and non-performers eventually get weeded out. But there are exceptions to these rules.

Cons

There is a ceiling of success that AMD can never seem to exceed. Intel essentially has us under their thumb, similar to a puppet-master over his puppet. They never want us to go away because they would encounter so much more scrutiny from the government, but they want us to bleed untl we're on life support - only to let him enough for us to stay alive.

Pros

There's a relaxed work environment with very flexible hours. As a co-op they expect you to come in for the hours to get your work done but it can be within the hours of your choosing. I went in from 7am-3pm so that I could do things outside of work and my superiors were more than supportive of it. They assign you a mentor who basically as an idea of what you're going to be working on and is helpful in solving the problems or knowing who would be knowledgeable in the area. The work that they have interns do is real and has an impact on the company in some form. From my experience managers have been very easy to go and talk to about questions that you might have and can settle things pretty quickly. Great pay from what I've been able to determine for interns in technology. Only a few other companies offer more than I know of. Provided me with money for moving down there and helped to set me up with an apartment. It's a big company so there's lots of room to move around should you not like the area that you're working in. And Austin, TX.....it's fantastic.

Cons

As anyone that has knowledge about the industry knows, AMD is going through a rough time with the market after the introduction of Core 2 from Intel. This is causing them to be a little tighter monetarily so cost savings has gone into effect. I was sharing a cube with two other co-ops but this had more to deal with too much in the way of hiring combined with their move into the new site. The new site is in the middle of nowhere so it's a bit of a commute for those and it might be a pain for future interns, especially those without cars.
