Pros

Never had an issue with pay. Nice mixture of people who on the whole were a joy to work with. Its a relatively secure job. The work is easy

Cons

Pay is now only minimum wage. You will have a basic contract which is normally a 8 hour weekend flex but there will be overtime however even if you were to do the same hours overtime wise week and week they are massively reluctant to contract you to it. Everyone is very stressed and very overworked causing moral to be through the floor due to a lack of other colleagues in terms of staffing levels and help from management. The management at store level is massively, massively lacking in ever sense oft the word. From lack of support to complete lack of communication and even though they cannot accept it there is very much a 'us and them' culture. When you have a visit from head office management (area manager and up) it becomes a comical farce because then there is pandemonium and only then will you see the management try and take control in order to get the credit. Praise and acknowledgment is very slow in coming if indeed you ever receive any at all. Training used to be excellent now your just thrown on the department with a very basic idea of what to do and expected to just do it. The work is easy but not until you know what you are doing. Colleagues are treated in general poorly. There is nothing to motivate you in general to do a good job and so a lot of people just don't. Things like breakfast of a morning have been taken away. The bonus received yearly has been massively reduced to the point none of us even recognise it. They are undergoing a mass 'reinvention' in order to make them more competitive due to the struggles that have been well documented in the news. This has been handled badly and is causing untold issues for customers and colleagues alike. My advice to you would be to walk around the store before you join and look at staffing levels on the shop floor, the level of product on the shelves and the general happiness of the staff it will tell you a lot before you start. Asda is all about the customer however it is severely neglecting its colleagues and now it really isn't a good place to work and the customers are dwindling down in numbers. Improve things for colleagues and the store as a whole will improve!.
