Pros

Step up programme available for colleagues that want to progress in the company. 10 percent discount and 20 percent on a day near Christmas. To some extent you get left alone to get on with your job which is quite nice. Flexible for contract change - I was allowed to go seasonal when I started university and the hours were good. Pay isn't so bad for a supermarket. Hard working colleagues rewarded with a gold star on the wall and a free lunch party - although if this falls on your day off you either come in for it or don't get one.

Cons

Step up programme is a long process. Managers have favourites. Bitchiness among staff, playground atmosphere - managers not very discreet, some not even approachable. Not many incentives, staff Christmas party very low budget, Christmas bonus is poor considering how much the store makes. Staff aren't particularly valued in my opinion. Training could also be a lot better, some staff given very minimal training and then told off for being slow or making mistakes.

Pros

I am well established within retail, having worked for tesco for 5 years. No Pro's (anymore)

Cons

No training Payroll budgets are tiny so constantly asked to send people home to save money, even if the team available is too small Dirty stores, inadequate budget for cleaners Benefits slashed in recent years Canteen removed from most stores Recruited as a section leader, expected to do the role of night manager (Rotas, overtime planning, time management, disciplinary) Extremely poor pay (75p more per hour than replen colleagues with all the responsibility of running entire store) Management are extremely critical with a very negative and suspicious outlook Staff morale extremely low, 90% of people were either thinking about leaving or felt undervalued in some way
