Pros

For a simple shop job, you do get a decent hourly rate - a lot of shops pay less. Even under 18s get 6.66 an hour, which is unheard of in retail. Good as a means to an end - get your bills paid and not too hard. Get to meet a lovely bunch of people, most colleagues are very friendly.

Cons

Heavy lifting is requires, and usually strange hours. I have Tuesdays and Wednesday's off and work all weekend, which means my social life has diminished. I work sometimes lates and sometimes earlies, the hours are usually all over the place. While it is decent money, it's not great and one or two supermarkets pay better. Little chance of progression too, it takes years and years and will not get you very far.

Pros

Its very clean and fairly quiet. You get staff discount. The hours are flexible. I have some lovely colleagues. There are proper staff designated bike sheds. There is free tea/coffee/squash/toast/spreads & newspapers in the canteen.

Cons

The staff car park is mainly gravel with pot holes and you get your shoes muddy when it rains. There is no air con in the staff changeling rooms/toilets so it becomes a sweat box in the summer. The lockers are too small for work shoes + handbag, spare tops etc. I rarely finish on time as it is frowned upon if you leave before finishing your shop. We have no regular meetings/huddles where we can air our concerns. We only have meetings for training/information about change of policy etc.
