Good job to have whilst studying

Pros

Relatively stress free (lets face it, its not hard to put food on a shelf), easy money, very flexible which allows university students like myself to work in a store at home and at uni, some really nice, hardworking people work for the company.

Cons

'Them and us' culture with management reminds me of being of secondary school pupil, adults are treated with more respect that teenagers and students who dont work full time and who are younger than management, working in retail can mean early starts (which i prefer but some people clearly do not), pay is lower than some competitors, restructuring will make career progression harder for those who wish to make big break within the company, management have got rid of canteens which offer good cheap food for all staff. This is bad considering many of the staff are on a low income, jobs have been lost and its a clear gimmick to help boost sales as staff will have no option but to purchase food from the shop floor. Some idiots work for the company (i.e. people who dont show up, are late every shift and dont work as hard as others etc.) like in any organisation, however managers have little room to manoeuvre in the way of disciplining and sacking staff that clearly take liberties.

Pros

Great colleagues to work with, real sense of belonging to the company, good pay and benefits scheme. Great opportunities for training schemes and developing skills if you put yourself up for it. Very good rewards system that recognises colleagues that work hard.

Cons

Can be difficult to step on the management ladder but still plenty of opportunities to learn new skills and move around departments.

Pros

Good scope for development within asda from all areas of the business. Like to promote from within, many gsms came from shop floor colleagues.

Cons

Long unsociable hours, expected to do unpaired overtime as a manager on a regular basis. Store moral very dependent on the store manager.
