Pros

My review is solely based on the Global Metrology Group. I think AbbVie outside of that Group is probably great. The benefits are amazing. Unfortunately new hires no longer get enrolled in the pension. The culture is very diverse friendly, and they treat their workers with the utmost respect. I used to be proud seeing our commercials come on TV. Made me proud!

Cons

Over the 3 years I was with the company I witnessed numerous violations against AbbVie's' policies and FDA regulations. I constantly tried to change what was going on but Global Metrology Management didn't care. Violations Summary: (Elements of each as they relate to the Metrology program at AbbVie) Pharmaceuticals 21 CFR 211 Biologics 21 CFR 606 Medical Devices 21 CFR 820 Human Tissues 21 CFR 1271 Advice to potential Metrology candidate: The Global Metrology Group is highly resistive to change due to legacy Abbott employees and weak Management. If your work ethic is to follow Metrological standard's and be an agent for change, this place is not for you. I tried for 3 years and 10 months. I didn't leave because I was shown the door I left of my own volition.

Pros

Very good team of scientists.

Cons

The company has a caste system. The caste is divided by grade. Managers have grade 18 and above, while minion employees have grade 17 and below. Minion employees are the life blood of the company, yet have no stock, 8% bonus with no performance modifier, and will have to jump through many layers of politics to get promoted. Meanwhile, managers will qualify for stock, 15% bonus with performance modifier ( up to 200% modifier), and exclusive access to fast-track promotion. As the company tries to consolidate three sites in the Bay Area and move to SSF, in the words of Tom Hudson, the company’s CSO, this move will bring more opportunity to everyone. Yet, what we saw in the past three years were fast track promotions to all the managers. Now there are a lot of Directors, Managers, Senior Directors, etc etc. The minion employees are left behind with no clear vision of advancement. At the same time, the managers have the privilege to work from home in their little castles for a foreseeable future, and the minion employees are all recalled on-site to work. To add salt to the injury, the company took back the free lunch benefit for onsite workers, and leave the employees struggle to find lunch. The implementation of Eat Club has been a disaster.

Pros

Abbvie is a great company. Benefits are the best and compensation is competitive.

Cons

My only cons apply to the QC Microbiology group. Management is rude beyond belief. Employees in the group are intimidated by management so they don't speak up about mistreatment (someone should report them to the Department of labor). Vacation time must be requested 1 year in advance! It is hard to change the culture of the group, management only blames employees for anything that goes wrong, nobody really talks to anyone, everyone sits in their cube to eat lunch, nobody in the group goes to company activities. I was extremely sad to leave such a great company but being in that toxic group was awful. After I couldn't take it anymore I was lucky to find a different job and never looked back!
