Pros

If you are interested in moving ahead, particularly as an Engineer, it is all in your hands. If you are smart, work hard, put in extra time, you're almost guaranteed to move ahead quickly. Politics don't come into play nearly as much as results.

Cons

Amazon is not the kind of place where you would pick a job and work there for 20 years. Amazon expects people to switch jobs every 2-3 years or so, work extra hours, and push hard. If you're happy with just doing your job, the 9-5 thing, it will not generally work too well. Amazon is a good place to work hard for 5-8 years, and then hop into any position you want somewhere else.. or work hard for 10-15 years and retire :) The benefits package isn't all that impressive compared to other companies, but they focus rewards on the financial side rather than benefits / time off.

Pros

You work with some really good people, you work on large scale problems and you can learn a lot about distributed systems. There's a lot of good automated infrastructure to help you get your job done.

Cons

There's a definite work-life balance conflict. Standard practice seems to lean toward over-hiring for positions with duties inappropriate for backgrounds. Infrastructure isn't complete - while there's great infrastructure for build/deploy the complications of the systems causes lots of development down-time and a lot of home-grown in-team solutions. Given the high requirements on individual teams, the amount of team-to-team sharing is pretty small.

Pros

Chance to work with great engineers, exposure to scaling, availability and reliability issues in software and systems, and great senior management who apparently know what they are doing. The stock units aren't bad either with the way the stock is doing lately.

Cons

Heavy oncall load in certain orgs/teams, few benefits compared to Google/Microsoft/Yahoo etc. Plus, too much emphasis on frugality to the extent of being cheap in too many issues.
