Awful Work Experience

Pros

I thought many of my colleagues at Avanade were intelligent and nice people, but...

Cons

Working at Avanade was probably the worst experience in my career. The company culture that was represented to me in many, many meetings with their internal recruiter, and the position I interviewed for in multiple interviews with the person I would report to (as well as his boss and his boss's boss), were completely different on the day I joined--and not for the better. This is a disturbingly disjointed company: the Accenture parentage, Microsoft relationship and desire to generate business independent of Accenture are responsible for a deep and ongoing identity crisis as well as a highly dysfunctional environment. One additional note: Avanade is (was) highly autonomous by region; my experience dates to 2016 as a mid-level manager in the Northeast region. It is theoretically possible that other regions are different (and hopefully much better run).

I appreciate you taking the time to provide honest feedback. While consulting is an industry known for constant change, the experience you describe here is certainly not the one we strive to provide our people. If you are willing, I would welcome to opportunity the discuss with you directly. Please contact me at jeyan.jeevaratnam@avanade.com.

Terrible Projects, No One Cares

Pros

Avanade has very good benefits. The 401k offers excellent fund choices, and the 3% match (received after a year) vests immediately. Their health plan is great and very cheap! Avanade has a minimum amount of training required every year, and they actually have funds to accommodate this. The company also provides vouchers for Microsoft exams. Avanade provides $2000 a year as a sort of tech fund, which is great. The company also provides a company cell phone plan (although data is paid by the employee if below manager level).

Cons

Unfortunately, the positives of Avanade cannot outweigh the fact that most of the company's assignments are terrible. I use the term "assignment" rather than "project" because most of the work is not even project-based. Much of Avanade's work is filling roles within Accenture accounts, or even staff aug for Avanade's own clients. True to consulting, the sales folks do not care if the work is something that will keep consultants engaged or happy, or help consultants advance their careers. Most assignments are far from leading edge. If the client likes you, it's possible to get stuck on such a dead-end assignment for years! If you are lucky enough to get on a direct Avanade engagement (i.e. not owned by Accenture), then your chance at a promotion will increase significantly. However, you will also get to experience Avanade's terrible project delivery. Account managers have little to do with the delivery side, and thus there is often a giant disconnect between expectations and what is actually delivered. The heavy travel requirements may be a negative to some, but I actually very much enjoyed that aspect of the job, especially the free vacations that can be had with the many airline and hotel points. However, being away from home 4 days a week is certainly not for everyone. Career managers are hit or miss. My own career manager was actually quite good, but most are not so lucky. At the end of the day, though, while your career manager can be essential to advocate for you during the yearly review, they really have very little influence on your daily work or your job satisfaction. Compensation is below industry average.

Pros

Not as bad as Accenture - but we're getting there! Pay is good OK benefits Work remotely

Cons

"People first!" and "make a human impact!" Total BS. Avanade suffers from its own blind spots in both technology and business and there is no scope of the future aside from the certainty that it will have something to do with tasteless Microsoft tools in Azure. Very weak team management who can only act on the results of the unhappy marriage of parents Accenture and Microsoft. Close to zero business pipeline and Avanade doesn't do marketing. Good luck there. Avanade was a fun place to be years ago, but the glory days of SI's is over in tech and the resulting hell to pay gets passed on to fall-guy proxy leadership. The organization is top-heavy with operational BS via Accenture, and culturally, Avanade itself. Anything outside the Azure box is nearly impossible on the sinking ship.
