Pros

Great location near lots of restaurants and coffee shops. You will learn a lot.

Cons

Lack of communication between leadership and the staff is constant on every annual survey, but never improves and mgmt doesnt care enough to improve. They’re trying to hold onto remaining talent because people are leaving by the masses. The company still operates like it’s MRD with the elitist attitude towards the Staff. There is no clear leadership, so you’re being directed from dozens of people. Partners and directors will sit on work for months, then drop it in your lap with an ASAP turnaround. If you want long hours and being underpaid, work here. If you want to watch management treat their staff like underlings, work here. If you want want to be blamed for leadership failings, work here. If you want to see other offices use the BDO’s perks and not the Norfolk office, work here. Leadership takes no responsibility for their mishaps. If you want to drown in a chaotic, unorganized mayhem, where they divvy out information on a “need to know” basis, but it’s your fault for not understanding, work here. When you tell them you are unhappy and found another job, they’ve been known to call your new employer to rescind their offer.

Pros

Good starting point for a first job. Relatively diverse team. BDO as a whole has an ok general reputation.

Cons

Extremely high turnover, toxic management and work culture, lack of interesting projects (a lot of compliance work), below market pay, no bonuses, very outdated office, no office snacks. Internal deliverable deadlines would be very arbitrary. Would send deliverables to managers for review and they would not review it until weeks later even it was communicated that these deadlines were very urgent. Mainly, the terrible and outdated management styles of the managing director. Many of my former colleagues and I experienced the lowest points of our mental health while working here.

Pros

There are a lot of problems at BDO. If you came from the Big 4, management might listen to you since they are interested in copying the big 4. Lots of problems, means lots of opportunities for you to help fix problems that need fixing if you are ok with working extra and extremely slow progress. Patience will be a virtue for you here.

Cons

Management doesn’t listen. If you are ok with punching in early and punching out late, you will fit in here. If you desire to think critically about how you’re auditing, you may not fit in here, because all they really want you to do is fill out the template as quickly as possible and maintain the status quo. The templates and software they have developed does not help you do your job and most of the time feels over complicated. Most critical thinking has been outsourced to National so you won’t do much of that if you’re in the practice. I would not recommend this place to a student looking to start their career here. This may be a good spot to land for someone who came from the big 4. The culture feels fake to most people. You get a bunch of slogans, innovation, and core value talk from management, but there isn’t much that lines up with reality.
