Pros

In chaos, there is opportunity. There is a problem-solving ethos that at times is inspiring. The ethos is especially heartening when used to solve internal problems, but doing so takes the talent away from profit making client services. Teaming across practice lines can result in rewarding outcomes for clients, despite the weirdly non-corporate internal stovepipes. When it works, it works well and clients appreciate the "art" we're able to bring to their problems.

Cons

Well, the stock purchase plan would be a downside now. Other than that practical item, there's the arrogance of senior leadership, the ridiculousness of re-branding (from tan and black to red) rather than getting the finances in order. And then there were all those upbeat but wrong messages from Harry You (some from the golf course) as financial statements repeatedly failed to satisfy investors or regulators. The government clients' decision cycles lead to periods of downtime that are filled with make work internal projects; the internal project management and financial programs are notoriously user-hostile and understood only by people who've been with the firm since the mid 90's. Internal IT capability and support is way below par, (and this for an IT consulting company no less).

Pros

BearingPoint will take chances on young consultants trying to get into the field. However the onus is on them to grow their careers. BearingPoint has a competent training program at Yale which is a unique course within the consulting world.

Cons

Overall the company is very clique-ish; where Sr. Managers stake out young consultants to become their lackeys going forward. Either you are part of that group or you are on the outside. Working for every MD is a different experience, which makes the entire experience good or bad depending on your MD and not the company; . There is no unifying culture.

Pros

As a global company with a large variety of projects, there's something for almost everyone interested in management and technology consulting. With a fairly strong presence overseas, there are also opportunities for foreign projects. The time off policy at BE is pretty great with 4-5 weeks of paid leave. Like any large company, there are good and bad people on projects and in management. Teams with solid leadership can be successful and a fun place to work. While it is always possible to work many hours on extra things like proposals, a healthy worklife balance is encouraged by some managers.

Cons

BE has progressively detioriated over the past 3 years. While maybe it wasn't a great idea to start working for a company in the middle of a major financial audit, I believed the hype that the tough stuff was behind BE and things would be better going forward. I've heard that every year during almost every global employee call. The company has been plagued with poor senior management financial decisions such as taking the company public when it obviously wasn't ready or even a good idea (under 50 cent stock price is a testament to that) to equally poor management decisions such as not investing in employees with incentives such as tuition reimbursement and adequate promotions and raises. Its extremely difficult to move from one project to another without assistance from friends in higher places. Many employees find it easier to leave the company then move projects.
