Pros

1. Exposure to incredibly rewarding work across the globe 2. Opportunity to make a real difference 3. Articulates strong values especially when it comes to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI)

Cons

1. Does not live by its values, promotions and opportunities are based on who you know in the organisation and your ability to network rather than own merit. New employees over-valued compared to long-standing employees who hold institutional knowledge, constant change of senior leadership (country level) who change direction every 3-4 years is wasteful and depletes energy. 2. Overall, not enough transferable skills as you're developing skills and experience to run a very unique business model and if you're made redundant it's hard to find similar jobs. 3. There is no process for senior managers to whistleblow on mental health issues - Covid-19 was incredibly stressful, a lot of senior managers kept the stress to themselves for fear of being seen as weak or being passed for promotions and/or other opportunities. The organisation overvalued success stories so it made it toxic as the real pressures on the ground became invisible.

Pros

If you're new to TEFL, or if you work somewhere like Monkey tree or Wallstreet it could be a positive step upwards. If you need teacher training it could be a good place to become familiar with ESL.

Cons

Where to begin? Working all weekend, working mornings and then coming back to work nights, low pay for Hong Kong. The adult classes use cookie cutter prescriptive materials that are painfully boring. Many teachers complain that they feel bullied by management. It's also looking very likely that since the grant was cut they are becoming more and more unable to compete in the market on a level footing, which may very well mean that they may close in the next few years.
