Pros

Free drinks, juice, soda, tea, coffee, etc. but no alcohol. Food in the cafeteria is fairly inexpensive. Everyone I worked with had a very high level of expertise. Communication was pretty open. Almost everyone in the group was very helpful to me as an intern. The company works on cutting edge stuff and the work is challenging and fun.

Cons

My pay as an intern was on the low side. $20.50/hour + 1.5X for OT. This was the summer after I finished college, right before starting grad school. It is sometimes a pain to do a teleconference with other engineers working in Irvine, CA.

Pros

Excellent engineering-focused environment. Broadcom started with a lot of core technical knowledge and has continued to acquire more every year. Large percentage of Engineers and PhD's in the workforce. Startup-like mentality means plans move ahead quickly for corresponding market success.

Cons

Risk of burnout; projects with less upside or longer payback have a hard time getting funded. Your experience may vary depending on which part of Broadcom emplys you - as an ongoing roll-up of many startups there is always cultural integration in process at various stages in various places. Another problem with the acquisition strategy is that founders or key members may leave the newly-acquired division quickly. Especially true now the share price is lower.

Pros

The company has a lot of cash on hand and they tend to give great compensation . The benefits are great and most of the engineers are very open and friendly. Also a nice cafe for lunch.

Cons

Problems are that there is a clear cut salary cap, so don't expect too many raises too quickly. They tend to hire mostly experienced candidates, which makes it difficult for new hires to enter the company. Also if you are under 35, you will have trouble meeting people your own age. I worked in IS and work-life balance is tough. Expect at least 50-60 hours of work, but at least
