Working at Canva is special

Pros

Before I begin listing all the employee benefits, I'd like to point out the sheer scale of goodness that Canva offers. Only recently the CEO announced she'll be donating about 40% of her personal equity for the good of the world, which amounts to about $5 billion USD! There's many billionaires in the world but no one has pledged this much so far (with the exception of MacKenzie Scott)! There is this sense of higher purpose here that you will never feel at other big companies i.e Google, Amazon, Facebook, all of which have well documented issues! I think this fact alone makes it great company to work for - the sense that you are making the world a better place! Culture of course is one of the best as well. Employee benefits include: - Generous Equity - Good salary - In house daily breakfast and lunches (during covid a daily stipend of about 16AUD) - Gym - Fully stocked kitchens - Lots of other little grants to help your personal growth - And so much more!

Cons

Hypergrowth but I think Canva has a great employee Onboarding system to help ease this huge flux of newbies every two weeks or so

Pros

Amazing culture Huge growth potential Founders are very accessible Great onboarding Great benefits and competitive salary

Cons

Fast growth makes it difficult to know who you need to get involved in a project conversation. The company uses Slack instead of email for almost everything, it has some pros but it’s a bit of a learning curve given the amount of channels

Pros

- Great office - Excellent pay - Reasonable onboarding process for general corporate things + general engineering things

Cons

- Team didn't use structured container of work model (e.g., sprints) - Team didn't have daily video stand ups, nor other regular rituals - Backlog of work wasn't prioritised and cards didn't have well defined definitions of done - Team didn't have shared deliverables / team was split into silos of knowledge - A lot of implicit social coordination + coalition building skills required - Nobody on team was colocated - Lots of red tape. A looot of it. To get something simple approved in one instance I needed to get sign off from my one over one over one. - Heaps of back and forth on design docs without being able to align quickly on what needs doing. - Newbie tasks not already scoped + are secretly "redesign our entire team workflow". - Culture of everyone on the team working on their own thing; no shared team deliverables. - Review culture not aligned towards shipping + mildly antagonistic. - Culture of introducing scope from e.g. slack message from previous day that newbie is supposed to be keyed into, into otherwise small pull requests.
