Pros

Perks: West Creek gym, best cafeterias I have seen in the corporate world, good insurance, ESSP, etc. Campus setting is pretty to look at. Intelligent people (for the most part) to work with. Generous severance package

Cons

Cutthroat environment. They are in massive "redeployment" (layoff) mode. The good news is that the severance is so good and the morale is so bad that many people like me took the money and ran. Meanwhile, there is a constant stream of new college hires walking in. Richmond associates are being asked, then begged, then forced (or get redeployed) to move to Willmington, DE. Cross calibrations/Performance reviews are a year round process. It is all based on comparisons to your peers throughout the company who are all working on different types of projects. This means it is a back room process with your manager fighting (or not) with the other managers to see who gets what raises & promotions. Read up on your Machiavelli if you want to survive here.

Pros

Genuinely really great and talented people working here, and the intended work-life balance is pretty good, but I say intended for a reason

Cons

It's been said a thousand times, the performance review here is terrible. It encourages you to not help your teammates because their success is necessarily your loss, and their loss is your gain. I know people try to ignore that aspect, but when it gets close to that review period there is a distinct increase in wait time to get PR reviews and large decrease in help from teammates. It's a terrible incentive structure and absolutely hurts team morale and cooperation; plus it destroys any semblence of the work-life balance Capital One professes to have. You need to be better. Your managers will tell you to get off at 5 but everyone knows that at the end of the day, you work as much as it takes to do better than your teammates. It's a dog-eat-dog culture and nobody likes it. As an asside don't plan on working your way up here, getting promotions is a real bear of a task and your work-life balance is going to get so much worse in order to get there.

Pros

Good learning opportunities e.g cloud technologies and architecture skills. Good benefits. Decent work-life balance. Work with some bright people.

Cons

Stack ranking at its absolute worst. The performance system is tweaked adhoc (grading criteria, rate cutoff dates, consequences of landing below, bell curve percentages etc.) even retroactively, to cut people instead of publicly announcing layoffs. This has fostered a toxic environment where associates fight over the pieces that subjectively matter the most during calibration time instead of focusing on proper development practices. This is a very stressful environment to work at and can't, in good faith, recommend it for the sake of the employee's mental health and job stability.
