Pros

Cisco pays well and is a very recognizable name in the tech sector that looks good on resumes. The San Jose area is also pretty rockin. Also lots of different areas of expertise to choose from; hardware, software, low level and high level programming opportunities are offered. Plus you get to choose your own team in the Cisco Choice program.

Cons

San Jose is a very expensive place to live and even though they pay well it seems like it is not enough sometimes. It is a big corporation, so it can be difficult to earn personal recognition or advance the ladder.

Pros

Steady pay, good overall benefits (until they take those away), if you really don't want to work, you have a great place to hide.

Cons

Lack of promotion opportunities, completely clueless middle and upper management, short sighted - the next qtr is all management is worried about. It would be nice to have a long term plan that showed where we are going and how we are going to get there. The main R&D is buy a company that does something we want, put a logo on it and say it is part of the "human network"

Pros

Flexibility in terms of telecommuting, good environment in the offices, generally positive coworkers, some very smart and knowledgeable people. Until recently, the chance to train to learn new skills and broaden existing skills.

Cons

Intensely political with limited to no chance for advancement, no raises and generally downward trend in salaries. To advance requires spending a great deal of time selling oneself and picking high visibility projects rather than just doing the job at hand and doing it well. To advance and get a raise you either have to give 100% of your time to Cisco, polish the proper knob or hitch yourself sycophant-like to an up and comer. Or some combination of all three. It's not about results it's about self-marketing.
