Pros

I can't recall any good thing about Citi apart from its brand.

Cons

This is my first review on Glassdoor, I had to spend some time to get to this point. Believe me, even if one person takes decision NOT to join Citi based on this review, I will be happy and satisfied with time I spent here. I wish glassdoor should have had less than 1 ratings, but that's not available. This is worst ever place I worked for. Forget about IT work culture n work life balance, thats like day dream while working with Citi. This has worst management who lacks almost in every department where you need support from them. Rather, they make sure to create such a environment where employee is totally frustrated, demotivated and works on the given direction without any scope of discussion. How do they manage to do that, very simple. Throw some additional money than market on your face to make sure you doesn't get switch atleast next 3-4 years and then treat you the way they want. Here success mantra is to please your bosses, follow their orders, forget about any discussions or suggestions with them and then transfer all your pressure on your juniors. No person who has self belief and motivation can easily do that, but many are trapped and not ready to leave because they are not "able" to move. In risk dept of Pune, people act like bosses. Here 1 higher hierarchy means you are not even 10% important than your 'BOSS' and then they will screw you up badly. You will end up frustrating your own professional and personal life. Forget about work life balance. Here favoritism absolutely matters, if you can butter your boss this is place for you, if you can't don't even try with this. This organization teaches you lesson of lifetime that money can never be bigger than your own and family happiness. I would suggest that to learn this mantra, you should not take risk of joining 'Risk' technology, which will be biggest risk you ever faced and effect will be such that you will feel like you lost all years from your life for which you worked here, and it takes some efforts to move on from these memories.

Pros

Work hours are totally flexible and it's possible for most developers to work from home. Unlimited hot beverages are available and there are good efforts in organising social events. Also, there is an enormous library of online training available and some on-site training also. The 'Citi collaborate' work social networking tool is also an excellent source of resources and a great way to network with people outside your department - and so it's easy to network with people working with similar technologies or with similar interests. There are many clubs/societies organised within Citi covering a wide spectrum of interests and sports. Citi donates 1 day of every employees time to take part in a volunteering activity within the community. Desks are big enough and chairs are suitable.

Cons

Everything is done with a minimum of resources. Teams are running complex applications without proper processes and methodologies. The business just doesn't seem to understand what is actually needed to make software. Teams don't have proper build or test processes, and many developers don't even have some of the most basic developer tools and hardware. Most of the developer machines are very low-spec, and can be painfully slow when dealing with some development work. Also, my department seems to have a gigantic budget shortfall, and they've dealt with this by forcefully relocating people to cheaper locations and by getting rid of many contractors (and not replacing them). Additionally, many developers have to work unsociable hours for weekend releases, and they are not paid for their troubles, and even getting the time off in lieu wasn't easy. Also, making requests for basic software, hardware and configurations is a painful and extremely slow process. I don't see any of these things improving any time soon. It's actually difficult to be productive at Citi, there are many obstacles, and not just because of strict banking regulations. Also, there is little cohesion within the department.

Pros

Benefits are good. Decent medical, dental and disability, 401K.

Cons

Very few people are happy. Managers are under the gun to produce, this trickles down to the actual implementors. Long hours are required to meet unreasonable schedules. I worked as a contractor for my first 8 years, a clear violation of the tax code. The IRS would say I was an employee without benefits. Contractors are treated like disposable flashlight batteries. They finally made me an employee, for which I am grateful. However, the great efforts I made whilst contracting were largely unrewarded and meant nothing to my new managers. The year end evaluations are the same cookie cutter evaluations that everyone else uses. Only we have to show how we "lived" the corporate values. The process bears a remarkable similarity to worker evaluations in the bad old Soviet Union. How did the worker exemplify our Communist values? Did he/she contribute substantially to the 5-year plan? Most of the time, developers are trying to keep up with demands, and are happy to meet the requirements. However, in the Jack Welch tradition, management wants superstars. So meeting requirements is not sufficient to advance, and one has little time to possibly exceed them. Working as a developer, my US team got whittled down to just a few contractors in India and Ireland. The work was lonely.
