Pros

I've been working at Connected Lab for about a year now. I can say that I've learned a lot since I've joined Connected Lab. The opportunity to see the problems in different business domains through our clients is a great experience. As an engineer I've gotten to learn various skills in both mobile and web development and it's really helped me round out as an engineer. The culture is nice and the people are great to work with. The company does a great job of building a very community oriented atmosphere with things like Demos and Socials. There is a lot of transparency within the company and Mike (our CEO) does a great job of sharing strategic initiatives with the company weekly.

Cons

- There is a strict 9-6 policy which I really don't like. - Feels like there is lack of autonomy in how we can do things (mandatory pair programming, 9-6 strict working hours). Sometimes this can feel very restricting at work. - Some of our clients are very dull to work with in that the work we are assigned to do is very mundane and it feels like the developers were put on for staff augmentation. - Not as much work in the connected software space as I expected. Hopefully this changes soon. - Compensation is not as high but this is expected since the company is bootstrapped.

Thanks so much for taking the time to write such a thoughtful review. It means a lot to me that you’re learning and growing at Connected. It’s my priority that all engineers are engaged and challenged and that they are able to enjoy the office culture. I’m particularly happy to see you highlight the transparency within the company. We are unique as a “tech company” in terms of our engineering practices and our 9 to 6 office hours. We believe our engineering practices (including pair programming) result in better quality, a more sustainable pace, and an extremely collaborative engineering culture. We would love to talk more about this if you have some ideas for improvement! Our office hours are designed so that we can spend focused time building better products together and eliminate the overtime work that occurs in rapidly growing companies like ours. We are flexible for team members to attend appointments and commitments as we value life outside of work. Let’s chat if you have new ideas on how we can ensure a sustainable pace and collaborative culture across all our teams. Connected is focused on both Innovation and Delivery projects for a very important reason: we must do both if we hope to be great at either one. Along the same lines, we believe that individuals at Connected must get experience doing both if they hope to be great at either one. It’s this end-to-end experience that separates us (and our team) from other dev-only or creative-only firms in the marketplace. I think we should take pride in strong delivery since most software projects fail and we’re in a small minority of companies that have such a high success rate. All of this said, if you prefer more innovation-focused projects, come let Damian or me know. We’d be happy to focus some more of your time on innovation-focused work :) Thanks again for your very detailed and constructive review!

Pros

- Company culture is great. It's open, communicative and encouraging. - We get to work with some of the most amazing clients and organisations in the world. - The people here are incredible. Everyone's skills, experiences and personalities are all things that all of us can learn a lot from. - Plenty of opportunities to take initiative and responsibilities to develop as a person and a professional. - Support, help, encouragement and mentorship from more experienced and senior people. - Honestly this company is pretty much all you ever want from a work place.

Cons

- Pay can be higher, but I believe management is working on it. - As the company grows, it's facing scaling challenges that can show up as inconsistencies or miscommunication, but everyone is involved in solving the problems and make it a better work place.

Thank you for your review. It means a lot to me that you took the time to highlight the things we’re doing right, and provide constructive criticism on areas we need to do better. I’m happy you love our team and our culture. It’s the reason why Connected is attracting the partners we are and growing at such a fast pace. My #1 priority is to continue to build a solid team of smart, reliable and kind people who are passionate and excited to teach and learn everyday. As for areas for improvement, we are working really hard trying to bring salaries up to the industry average. We’re still a young company, but on the right track to reach parity soon. In the meantime, we do review salaries twice a year, so if you have any concerns please don’t hesitate in addressing them. As you mentioned, we are trying to be as transparent as possible, and want to address any issues when they arise, so be sure to let me and/or the mgmt team know when you have questions. I appreciate your note about developing internal talent and promoting from within. Can you share some more details on this comment at mike.stern@connectedlab.com? We are working on creating a manager development program, but in the meantime I highly recommend you join our Manager Training Podcast Sessions that meets every Thursday. Thanks again!

Pros

- #1 by far is the absolutely outstanding team of people to work with -- I love the emphasis put on hiring people who aren't just smart, but enthusiastic, and above all, *kind*. Pays off an incredible amount, especially in an environment like this one that focuses so much on pair programming. - I've been learning an incredible amount every day since I started. There's that pairing at work again -- ramping up on projects, languages, frameworks, etc is blazingly fast compared to other places I've worked that don't pair. - Pretty much every company likes to show off their set of values, but I've never encountered anywhere that *lives* them as much as Connected. It's the polar opposite of that trite corporate BS you usually see. - The whole management team seriously values each and every one of their employees. That probably sounds trite too, but it's true. Ideas carry just as much weight coming from a senior engineer as from an intern. Senior employees practically bend over backwards to support their team's personal growth/development. I've heard of sales turning down major projects just because the rest of the team wouldn't enjoy working on them. The list just goes on. - The culture consistently manages to hit that sweet spot between "it's a startup, everything's crazy, whatever we'll just wing it" and "we need to have some solid and proven structure to keep us all performing at our best". It's an insanely hard balance to strike, and I'm honestly floored by how well everyone manages it. Even the more heavily structured parts all feel useful/neccessary - normally you'd expect at least a bit of "awkward red tape", but I haven't really encountered it. - I thought I'd hate the strict 9-6 work hours (no sleeping in?!), but I've actually grown to love it. I'm no morning person, but being able to work together beside your pair the whole day and then confidently leave work at a predictable hour is huge. Bottom line: I feel more fulfilled each and every day at Connected than I did on the best days of any other job I've had. I don't imagine leaving here for a long, long time.

Cons

- Most clients are pretty fantastic, but there are still occasionally those unavoidable roadbumps you get with any services company. - Connected doesn't really compete on compensation -- it's not absurdly low or anything, but if salary is really important to you, you're probably better off looking elsewhere. (Also, everyone else seems to put "office coffee" here... the new nespresso is great, but am I the only one that likes the old coffee machine too?)

Thank you, thank you, thank you for your glowing review! I’m so happy to hear that you’re loving life at Connected. It means the world to me that you’re learning every day, enjoying pairing and feeling like a valued member of the team. Connected’s goal is to empower the BEST people to do the BEST work of their lives, and your review makes me feel like we’re on the right track. Your comment about the office coffee made me lol. Everyone has different tastes, and while the new Nespresso is awesome, I also liked the old coffee machine :-) As a software consultancy, we’re bound to hit some roadblocks with client work, but I’m going to ensure that we continue to be open about why those issues are popping up so we can avoid repeating them. And although we’re still slightly under the average regarding salary, we’re working really hard to bring it up to parity and will get there soon. It’s awesome that you’ve embraced Flat & Fearless! And if you ever feel the need to call me out on anything at all, please do! I’m open to feedback 24/7.
