Pros

This is going to read cliche, but I can genuinely say that the people I worked with made this work experience enjoyable and tolerable.

Cons

Leadership eliminated it’s flexible work arrangements and has mandated a return to office policy. The CEO has been clear that he “doesn’t believe in work life balance” and is tasking leaders to micromanage employees by tracking badge-ins. While I personally wasn’t impacted, it put me in a position to lead my team with a “do as I say, not as I do” approach which I was not aligned with. As a remote employee, I didn’t feel like I’d have the ability to grow my career unless I wanted to move to Riverwoods. In a new hire call, the CEO answered a career advancement question and stated that we’d most likely have better career opportunities if we were in the office.

Pros

Mostly great people to work with. Nice campus before Covid lockdown. Decent Health Ins, but getting more expensive and restrictive each year, Great Paid Time Off days right from the date of hire.

Cons

Became almost all about cost cutting the last few years. Hiring more contract employees than real employees. Most people overworked. Huge numbers of long term employees have left in the past few years. Managers and Directors have their favorites and everyone else is left to fend for themselves.

Pros

For years it was known that Discover was one of the top employers in Chicago. Turnover was non existent and it was common for employees with 20 years of tenure. Discover grew earnings 10x since spinning off from Morgan Stanley. Promotions were merit based and if you contributed results you were rewarded financially and provided with advancement.

Cons

Where do we start. In recent years since Nelms left, the leadership team has implemented the great purge of any employee over a certain age level or with tenure. Diversity does not apply across the board if you fell into this demographic. This created a toxic culture where everyone is worried more about protecting their job vs delivering results. I was lucky to land a Senior Leadership position prior to the purge. Unfortunately I’m contacted almost weekly from former employees were were some of the most dynamic people I have worked with who were impacted by this change.
