Pros

Even when I think critically about it, I still don’t know if I’d pick another first career straight out of university. Meltwater really does give you a lot of responsibility from day 1 on the CS side and you get to learn a lot about sales. There’s also amazing client exposure, I got to work with some amazing clients at big name brands who had quite developed PR/marketing strategies. MONEY. If you are good at your job and can communicate well with clients, you will make more money than you could have ever thought out of undergrad. I’ve met amazing friends here, definitely some interesting characters, but people I genuinely love and inspire me every day. I would also say that management does care about the people on the ground, they just often don’t communicate it properly.

Cons

Oh god .... where to begin: Monthly. Sales. Targets. I genuinely believe that a lot of meltwater problems stems with this above concept. Firstly, having a target every single month causes burnout and stress for every single person in the organization. The company also has a strategic goal of raising the average deal size but that often requires a longer deal cycle and we spend the last week of every month dropping our pants to get a deal in. It’s bad for business and it also causes us to lose credibility as a company. We also don’t spend enough time building value because we’re too busy trying to ask our clients to renew 6 months in advance. Lastly, there is a stigma with taking vacation when it suits you at the company even though they promise 4 weeks a year. Management: Meltwater only promotes from within, that means every single senior manager/director at this company virtually came here straight out of undergrad and its the only place they’ve ever worked. The amount of conformity of thought here is astonishing to me. All these directors have never had unique career experiences and have been raised to think the meltwater way... there is no critical thinking here and if you raise any objection to this you’re either perceived as rogue or against the culture. Platform: Granted, a lot of what we do depends on partnerships, but the platform is a disaster. It’s difficult to use and articles are missed all the time. When clients churn it’s blamed on the reps but it’s usually not our fault. We keep investing into new tools while forgetting that we have to make the 90% of our clients on our current tools happy. Diversity: This is the whitest company I’ve ever seen in my life. We pretty much hire only frat boys and sorority girls who come of as extroverted and friendly in the interviews. Most hires are also referrals from existing friends who look the same, it’s a self fulfilling prophecy and we can’t only have people at this company who think and grew up the same way. There’s a lot more, but meltwater really needs to look in the mirror and think critically about how it’s going to grow as a company.

Thanks for taking the time to share this feedback. It’s great to hear you enjoyed the responsibility and learning experience you gained right out of school and met some great people along the way. People are central to everything we do at Meltwater. I’m sorry for your experience and your view on management, diversity and our product. We do promote our managers from within because we see the potential in our people and give them a lot of opportunity for growth and development. Regarding diversity, that is a foundation of our culture and something we really value, and we work hard to support people of all backgrounds so apologize if you have not had that experience here. Lastly, our product and industry is ever-changing, we support 30,000 clients globally and receive a lot of requests from clients on ways to improve. Our product roadmap is developed with that in mind and we appreciate and value your feedback.

Pros

The product is cool and if properly onboarded customers will get value from it. Coworkers are fairly social If you are new to sales would be a good place to learn the basics

Cons

Probably the cheapest company I have ever worked for. Benefits are below standard, they changed the commission plan every year I was there so that you would make less money, and you are expected to share hotel rooms when you travel. Look up Meltwater on Reddit or LinkedIn. They are known for very aggressive sales tactics which you will be forced to implement on your customers. A culture of micromanagement that comes from the top down. Virtually no avenue for promotion unless you are willing to move or get lucky and someone leaves.
