Pros

* Campus is nice. Having a solo (or shared) office is a huge benefit that you won’t find in most entry-level positions * if you play it right, you can come out with lots of transferable skills (coding/development, project management, general IT skills) * If you’re meeting expectations, you get a good amount of autonomy over what you work on outside your core role (customer work)

Cons

* COVID-19 response. Epic is bringing people back to campus (see advice to management for my thoughts on this). Almost all customer-facing and development roles could be done remotely anyways, so this is a reckless/dangerous decision justified as “preserving our culture.” * If you aren’t meeting expectations, you’ll be overwhelmed and you’ll probably have a bad experience. I’ve seen smart employees leave because they couldn’t keep up with the relentlessly high expectations for growth. * The expectation is that you work 45 hours per week. That’s not terrible, but to get ahead/exceed expectations you’ll be expected to work 50+. No matter what, you’re expected to take on more and more work every year to constantly “challenge yourself” which leads to employee burnout.

Pros

- Opportunities for growth - Flexible lateral growth - Good food - Decent pay for entry level, but I’m being pretty generous with that

Cons

- Upper management doesn’t care about employees - Repeating for emphasis - upper management really doesn’t care about you, and if they do, it’s because you probably don’t care about the employees either and drank too much of the cult kool-aid - Disappointing benefits that are far below sub par for the industry - The customers you help make way more than you when they could be wholly inexperienced compared to you - The Covid-19 response was laughable at best. Epic was truly negligent and didn’t care to express concern for its employees until someone leaked emails to the media, but of course said person got passive aggressively torn up in an internal response from upper management, and we were all warned with something along the lines of “keep this up and we won’t share anything with you anymore” - Repeating for emphasis, the COVID-19 response was absolutely awful and downright deplorable for a healthcare company. It truly showed how little employees were cared for and how disposable we were seen as. There is a lot more I can say on the topic, but I’ll leave it to the plenty other reviews pouring in about the circus that was the COVID response. - New grads and those tight for cash especially, please look at other options. I know how tempting this “decent” salary could look, and I know how tempting the thought of a stable income and stable position is, but you are worth so much more than putting yourself through this workplace. I cannot, in good conscience, recommend this workplace to anyone anymore, no matter how dire their situation might be. It’s really just not worth it.

Pros

Usually great compensation and raises (except this year), fantastic health insurance, competent coworkers

Cons

Epic is not the goofy, fun, forward-thinking company it once was and they've solidified a fear I've had for years that they flat out don't care about the safety, well-being, and happiness of their employees. They're unsupportive of families in particular, but are forcing all staff to put themselves at risk. Can't get on the bus you used to take because they're limiting capacity? Blindly trust someone you've never met before just because they're your coworker and grab a ride with them! No childcare because schools are shut down? Leave your 6 year old home alone and come it to the office! If they put half as much effort into finding ways to SUPPORT remote work and engaging employees in a community while they WFH as they do in to trying to convince everyone of their archaic viewpoint (see: erecting literal walls in tiny offices so people feel safe enough to be on a campus with 9k other people in the middle of a pandemic) then they could be a leader in the tech industry and actually keep talent around long term. By deciding that their entire identity is wrapped up in a few dozen buildings and refusing to update policies to align with new norms, they've positioned themselves poorly for a future where 95% of work can be done virtually and the fresh talent they'll be trying to attract know it.
