Pros

Epic provides good benefits. The salary is competitive, we have wonderful health insurance, a good bonus for travel is awarded and you get travel rewards for personal trips, the campus is a lot of fun, you get access to on-site oil changes and dry cleaning, and the food on campus is DELICIOUS. Everyday I work with industry leaders to improve quality in healthcare, decrease costs, and impact peoples lives. No one can downplay the importance of this. It certainly is the reason "why I get out of bed". Not to mention, this is a booming industry as healthcare becomes more politically driven. My job is very flexible. You can do almost anything on a given day. I tackle new problems on a regular basis and management works hard to make sure I'm doing what interests me and what I'm good at. There are plenty of opportunities to find these things too. The Integration Engineering role is great for Computer Science students who don't want to do full time development. This is ultimately the reason I chose Epic over other CS jobs. You get an opportunity to continue to use your CS background doing development in addition working directly with customers in project management like roles.

Cons

Work life balance is hard for new employees. I struggled my first few years to balance work with having a life. After a while, you get better at managing your own time and this isn't the case anymore, but it's definitely something I struggled with in the beginning. There's a tendency for people to over commit their time. You have to be careful to take on only what you can handle. Management staff is sometimes new and unprepared for leadership. This isn't _always_ a bad thing, but it can sometimes lead to poor morale or employee dissatisfaction.

Pros

The main campus is an impressive display of architecture and landscaping. It is filled with eclectic artwork both inside and outside. It also has rural elements like a working farm, surrounding corn fields, and a giant treehouse in the forest. The atmosphere is casual. The break rooms are always stocked with milk & juice & tea (which is great for people like me who like to eat breakfast first thing in the morning while catching up on email). The cafeteria is low-priced and the culinary team is top-notch. The job training is extensive. They'll teach you what you need to know to do your job so previous experience isn't required (even for development) but a high learning aptitude is. The company heirarchy is rather flat so it doesn't take long for people who are motivated and assertive to make a significant impact. The workforce is large and dynamic. I like to play sports and have been involved with clubs that play football, soccer, and frisbee; there are many clubs available for other hobbies, too. Working at Epic is an interesting experience. It is challenging and frustrating at times but it is never boring.

Cons

The workload is heavy so it can be difficult to maintain a healthy work/life balance. It can be done, but it requires good task prioritization and time management. Documentation for internal systems is sometimes scattered or sparse. Most common processes are well-explained but the obscure one's are sometimes esoteric, which can cause headaches since Epic is growing and changing rapidly. There's a lot of work to be done (and being done) to improve documentation.

Pros

I have seen projects that I have contributed to benefit end users of our software; I think that in my own way I have had an impact on the patient care for the organizations I have worked with. That is one of the aspects of working at Epic that keeps me coming back. I find the need to build relationships with the team members from the customers challenging at times, however I think that some of the biggest leaps I have made in my personal growth have come from learning how I interact with others and communicate in order to accomplish projects. While many of my tasks are driven by outside forces, like my customer needs or healthcare initiatives, I have a significant level of autonomy for how I approach those tasks and what skills of mine I use to complete my work.

Cons

It took me a while to learn how to manage my time, I experienced significant frustration stemming from small tasks taking charge of my days and pushing off the interesting stuff. I find that this is a challenge that never really goes away, in a customer facing role. It can be easy to lose sight of the big picture and get mired down in issues coming in from customers and internal projects. While I enjoy learning to build better relationships with my customers, it can also be one of the frustrating aspects of the Technical Services role. I have had specific individuals who occupied significant amounts of my time for explanation, training, etc. and ultimately did not follow through in a manner that benefited the project. When this is a person who is outside your control, it can lead to frustration.
