Pros

Challenging and meaningful work: contributing to policies and actions that affect the lives of all 450 million Europeans. Training courses provided throughout your career. Opportunities to progress into new professional fields. Possible to change departments (DGs) and even to move from one EU Instutution to another.

Cons

Apply with your eyes fully open. Recruitment is normally at the "entry grades" and thus aimed primarily at younger people. Although it is possible to progress right to the top - this takes a very long time. Make sure you apply for a competition at the right level for your qualifications and experience. There are too many frustrated secretaries holding a masters degree !
