Pros

Brand name recognition, access to research, great benefits. These come from the parent brand of Gartner Digital Markets (GDM).

Cons

I worked for GetApp, a research company based in Barcelona which was acquired by GDM. I worked from the Software Advice (SA) office in Austin, TX; Software Advice was another research company that was technically part of GDM. The SA office culture was quite poor compared with its parent brand, Gartner. At Software Advice / GDM: Lack of structure. You are reporting to a team that is based in DC, Austin, Barcelona, and Hyderabad. There's a good chance that your editor will be based in a different country. No training. You are expected to be an expert in a single category of software but are not given any training in that area. In my case, they hired me as an SME for experiential marketing, then had me writing about accounting (I'm a former content strategist, not an accountant.) Management changes. The editor I interviewed with was gone by the time I arrived (three weeks in between acceptance and start), leaving me with an editor who resided in Barcelona. The team's reporting structure also changed significantly - our team leader was transitioned to another role due to upper management changes, and we were left with a sort-of nightmare situation where everyone self managed but had to report to an out-of-the-loop boss. Company culture. A normal day in the SA office is, in essence, that of a call center. You role is to stay quiet while cold callers are on the phone, 9-5, and then to write - about research and online trends - in that environment. Managers tend to stay away. Generally a pretty toxic environment. If you have the option, stay away.

Pros

- Some remote work possible - Work with 80% of Fortune 1000 Companies - Very friendly culture - Benefits are fairly standard - not the best/not the worst - right in the middle

Cons

- Compensation isn't great - Salary control severely limits financial growth - No skills development, investment in marketable skills, certifications, or growth of virtually any kind - This particular position doesn't really take one anywhere....kind of a dead-end, unless you wish to manage a team.
