Pros

You get to work on some of the most pressing and important problems in the UK.

Cons

Systemic racism, hardly any diversity and inclusion at management level. If you speak up against the echo chamber you will not progress and will be deliberately and tacitly held back. Top down approach not working - the top say the right stuff and what needs to be said because they know they have to, the junior staff all agree but middle management fail to implement any changes to recruitment and ways of working, so it stays nice and comfortable for white career civil servants who are not interested at all in making changes. The stats speak for themselves: the Home Office has one of the highest numbers of BAME staff as a govt dept and the lowest number of BAME staff in senior roles.

Pros

Good employer - diverse areas you can work in

Cons

Nothing - lower paid than some private sector roles but counter balanced by wide range of work, job security, flexible working patterns
