Pros

flexibility, good work life balance, ok salary, important areas of work, big dept with lots of opportunities, some excellent people and teams doing fast and interesting work,

Cons

poor performance is not dealt with and can wreck other people's work experience, you may not agree with the political decisions you have to implement, large dept means can be cumbersome and slow.

Pros

You learn a lot and get good experience but you don’t need to stay very long to get what you need out of it.

Cons

Poor senior management, good managers are not valued. Competent staff are continually overloaded and not rewarded and poor staff are not dealt with. In some cases I have seen poor performance rewarded just because managers are too weak to have honesty conversations with difficult and obstructive people. Ministers are too demanding and unrealistic. Everything that is said about the Home Secretary and her unreasonable behaviour or completely true.
