You have a job, and a salary. Plus, if you make it that far, a very nice pension.

Cons

Between the bureaucracy, micromanagement, poor systems, and unnecessary processes, you will find nothing here but frustration, anger, and resentment. Unless you're fresh out of Uni or starting your first job. In which case you'll known no better and accept it blindly (like senior management do). This is why DMs only have a life span of two years. NOT because of the content of the interviews they're performing (as harrowing as it can be). My advice: don't apply. But if you do, get signed off probation ASAP and move on within the Civil Service ASAFP (the career opportunities are actually quite good - look at FastStream)

Everyone is very friendly and supportive

Cons

Initial training is not enough, more training is required. Although the HO do support their staff it is a very challenging role and I would not recommend this for everyone
