Pros

Hopper offers competitive pay, good benefits, and some interesting problems to solve. The company is remote with no obligation to be in office. Work life balance is what you make it- PTO requests are not denied, don’t be afraid to take it! If you don’t stand up for yourself it will not be given to you. Your mileage may vary based on team culture. Overall infrastructure is pretty good, they are not afraid to spend money where it is needed. Data is essential to their business operation. Growth has been fast.

Cons

Management is hyper focused on maintaining their own image within the company. Much of senior management is in power not because of merit, but because of longevity and rapid growth—- these decision makers appear to lack the requisite skills needed in their position and are threatened by exemplary new hires that may out shine them or shed light on their weak technical skills. This is especially true about the (post layoff) senior management. Being in the in-crowd is crucial for success here. Hopper, although claiming to be data driven, seems to use data as a scapegoat for management or market failure. Data scientists do not have the power internally to say “there is no evidence to support that” they are pressured to provide evidence that management is correct in their thoughts, and when projects fail, the blame is always laid on the data team. Be careful here future data engineers, ego rules all, whole teams are seemingly randomly laid off and you will be tasked with proving senior managers right, instead of tasked with providing solid correct answers. This has proven evident several times throughout the companies history of layoffs and erratic restructuring. Online Travel Agencies success and growth tend to be tied very closely to the price of airfare. Protection products may correlate to Covid fear. Think critically when analyzing future potential in this industry. Employees and positions are Hopper have recently seen changes in titles for data scientists/engineers/analysts/etc— be careful what you sign up for; Your job may actually consist of you being a SQL monkey for non-technical PMs.
