Pros

You develop professional comoderie with your team when you work in large scale projects that span several release cycles and versions. Process-driven work structure. If you are proactive in your options to advance in your career, you will get ahead in IBM.

Cons

You must be willing to work anywhere from 40-80 hours a week for product development in the IBM Software group. Micromanagement is quite common with both senior management and team leads. Even if you size your work to fit in an Agile or waterfall development cycle, you will get micromanaged to the nth degree.

Pros

Advantage is flexible work timings, flexible work culture a lot of independence in comparison to other similar companies. IBM Global in itself has lot many good initiatives which employees from India can also participate and take advantage like Corporate Services Peace Corps, IT Architect and choosing a good career path. But I am sure for that if you manage to find a good mentor who is unbiased then its good in IBM. Probably work culture in locations other than Kolkata is much better and professional.

Cons

IBM Kolkata has lot of Dada Culture and good for people who belong to this place and understand local language. But there is a large bias for people from outside in terms of opportunities and promotions even though they are very good. People talk in local language and make others uncomfortable. There is lots of politics and people do not value real work but instead flattery works. So if you are from outside please do not work in IBM Kolkata and in case you do then do not expect any growth. Also promotion in project doesn't mean your salary has increased. That means they make u work more on same salary.

Pros

* Large company, lots of room to join different groups * Bound to have very competent, intelligent people working alongside you * No myth about bureaucratic processes dragging down development * Most manager very fliexible about work, life balance * Many career development opportunities, perks that only a large company could offer * Jobs being outsourced

Cons

* Lots of lifers, particularly management who have no clue about life outside of IBM * Lots of layoffs, even while company is doing okay. IBM hides layoffs as resource actions to avoid having to report. 5000 people can apply for 5 open jobs.
